Reference Mark

Commonly known as the komejirushi or rice symbol, the Reference Mark is a typographic character used to direct the reader’s attention to a specific note or addendum. In Eastern typography, particularly within Japanese and Korean texts, it functions similarly to the asterisk in Western writing. While categorized under the General Punctuation block, it is recognized globally as a formal indicator that supplementary information follows, often appearing at the beginning of a footnote or a clarifying sentence.

Practical applications of this symbol are most visible in signage, advertisements, and academic publishing. Businesses often use it to introduce terms and conditions or highlight disclaimers on posters and flyers. In instructional manuals or legal documents, it serves to mark essential exceptions or parenthetical data that must not be overlooked. Because of its distinct X-shape with four surrounding dots, it is also frequently used in digital social posts to frame important announcements or decorative text.
