Em Dash Symbol

An em dash is read as a long dash or simply "dash" in English. It functions as a punctuation mark that sets off a parenthetical phrase or creates a strong break in a sentence, often replacing commas, parentheses, or colons for a more dramatic pause. In typography, it is the width of the letter "m" in the current typeface, distinguishing it from the shorter en dash and hyphen.

The em dash is frequently used in formal and creative writing to indicate an interruption, an abrupt change in thought, or to emphasize a clause. It appears in books, articles, and digital text where a writer wants to insert commentary or a sudden shift without using brackets.
