About the left single quotation mark symbol
The character is read as a left single quotation mark or an opening single quote. In English and many other languages, it marks the beginning of a quotation within a quotation, such as in the sentence "She said, ‘I’ll be there,’ and left." It also appears in some style guides as the preferred apostrophe for contractions and possessives, though this usage is less common than the typewriter apostrophe (U+0027). In typography, it is paired with the right single quotation mark (U+2019) to form a matching set for quoted speech or titles.
