Phi is the twenty-first letter of the Greek alphabet. In its lowercase form it appears as an oval with a vertical line through it, though handwritten and typographic variants sometimes use a closed circle with a stroke. The uppercase form is a large circle crossed by a vertical or horizontal line.
In modern Greek, phi represents the voiceless labiodental fricative sound /f/. Its primary use beyond alphabetic writing is as a mathematical and scientific symbol, where it denotes the golden ratio and the Euler totient function, among other quantities. It also appears in physics for magnetic flux and in engineering for the diameter of circles.
