The minus-or-plus sign (∓) is a mathematical symbol consisting of a minus sign directly above a plus sign. It is the counterpart to the more common plus-minus sign (±) and is used in expressions where a minus sign is applied to one term and a plus sign to another, typically in formulas involving square roots or trigonometric identities. For example, it appears in the formula for the cosine of a sum or difference of angles, where the sign of one term is opposite to that of another. This symbol is part of the Mathematical Operators block and is used in algebra and calculus to concisely indicate paired opposite signs in equations.
