About the multiplication sign symbol

In arithmetic, the character × appears between two numbers to show multiplication, such as 3 × 4 = 12. It is also used in mathematical notation for the Cartesian product of sets and in vector multiplication to distinguish from the dot product. This symbol is separate from the letter x and from the asterisk * that often substitutes in plain text.
