About the mercury symbol

The symbol depicts the caduceus, the staff entwined with two serpents, and represents the planet Mercury in astronomy, as well as the element mercury in alchemy. It also serves as the astrological symbol for the zodiac sign Gemini, which Mercury rules, and is used in biology to denote the male sex. In alchemical contexts it can stand for the planet or the metallic element, often associated with the planet's swift, mercurial nature.

This character appears in astrological charts, astronomical texts, and alchemical manuscripts, as well as in modern contexts such as horoscope publications, science fiction, and symbolic notation in various fields. Its design is distinct from the similar symbol for the planet Venus (♀), with the caduceus adding a pair of wings and two snakes.
