About the service mark symbol

A service mark symbol, composed of a capital S superimposed over a capital M, indicates that the preceding word or logo is a mark used in the sale or advertising of services, distinguishing them from the goods protected by a trademark. It is the typographic equivalent of the circled R for a registered trademark or the TM symbol for an unregistered trademark, and is used in legal and commercial contexts to assert a claim of ownership over a service brand.
